The Carolina Panthers are one of America’s youngest professional sports franchises, joining the National Football League (NFL) in 1995. Despite the team’s relative youth, the Panthers have enjoyed considerable success. Following a 7–9 opening season, Carolina went 12–4 in 1996 and reached the second round of the postseason.

Between 1997 and 2002, the Panthers struggled, winning only 34 games. However, the addition of quarterback Jake Delhomme translated to 11 wins in 2003 and the franchise’s first trip to the Super Bowl. The team’s memorable playoff run came to an end in the last seconds of the game, when the Panthers fell to the New England Patriots by a late field goal with a score of 32–29.

The Panthers have made numerous postseason appearances since 2003, highlighted by a second Super Bowl run following a historic 15–1 regular season. In 2016, Carolina came into Super Bowl 50 on the heels of a 49–15 Conference Championship win over the Arizona Cardinals, but could not generate consistent offense, and lost to the Denver Broncos 24–10.
